What's Changed

Victims' Economic Security and Safety Act (VESSA)
In 2024, the Illinois Victims' Economic Security and Safety Act (VESSA) underwent significant updates. The key changes include the expansion of leave reasons to cover more situations related to violence. These changes broaden the scope of VESSA, ensuring that victims and their families have the necessary support to cope with the aftermath of violence (EBG Law) (Illinois Blogs). The law applies to all employers with 15 or more employees.

Employment Laws: Paid Leave
The "Paid Leave for All Workers Act," effective from January 1, 2024 mandates that nearly all employees in Illinois are entitled to accrue paid leave at a rate of one hour for every 40 hours worked, up to a minimum of 40 hours (or five days) per year.

Employers must maintain healthcare benefits for employees during their leave and keep detailed records of leave accrued and used for at least three years.

Illinois also introduced a requirement for employers with 50 or more employees in specific areas to offer pre-tax commuter benefits starting January 1, 2024. This allows employees to use pre-tax income to purchase transit passes, reducing their commuting costs.

2024 Illinois Paid Leave for All Workers' Act
This groundbreaking law mandates paid leave for almost all workers in Illinois, regardless of the size of the business or the type of employment. This act marks a significant step toward ensuring that workers in Illinois have access to paid time off for any reason, providing greater flexibility and security for employees.

Illinois Job Safety & Health (IL-OSHA)
Illinois OSHA (IL-OSHA) introduced several updates to enhance workplace safety across various industries. Key changes include: Mental Health Focus, Updated Safety Standards, Chemical Safety, Training Enhancements, Stricter Enforcement on safety standards, expanded Record-Keeping requirements, Inclusion of Non-Traditional Workers extending to gig economy and remote workers.
