What's Changing
In Minnesota, employer-sponsored meetings (often referred to as "captive audience meetings") are meetings that employers require their employees to attend during work hours, typically to discuss issues related to workplace conditions, politics, or unionization efforts. These meetings have been a contentious issue, especially concerning workers’ rights to organize and discuss union-related matters.
In October 2024, Minnesota implemented a new law regarding employer-sponsored meetings. Under this law, employers are prohibited from forcing employees to attend meetings or receive communications that address the employer's views on political or religious matters. Specifically, employers cannot take adverse actions—like disciplining, threatening, or terminating employees—if they refuse to attend such meetings.
The scope of the law is limited, as employers can still communicate legally required information or hold meetings related to job duties, as long as participation is voluntary. Political matters broadly include anything related to elections, public policy, or labor organizations, while religious matters include religious beliefs or practices.
This update is part of ongoing efforts in Minnesota to protect workers' rights to freely engage or disengage from certain communications in the workplace. The law took effect on October 1, 2024.
All employers must:
- The law mandates that employers must post a notice of employees' rights regarding these meetings, and it must be displayed in areas where other employee notices are typically posted.
